Carthage splits with Ozark, Willard

  CARTHAGE –  Ozark defeated Carthage 56–7 and Carthage downed Willard 51–27 in a Cen­tral Ozark Con­fer­ence Large Schools Divi­sion double-dual on Tues­day.
  For Carthage, 119-pounder Tommy Fea­gans and and 140-pounder Harold Cooper were two-time win­ners. Fea­gans, who is ranked third in Class 3 by MissouriWrestling.com, recorded a 14–5 major deci­sion over Ozark’s Dmitry Loftis, who is ranked third at 112. Fea­gans is 16–1. Cooper improved to 13–10 by beat­ing Ozark’s Levi Tucker 9–8 and post­ing a major deci­sion over Willard’s Codey White.
  A cou­ple other pre­mier matchups occured at 112 and 160. Ozark’s Colton How­ell, ranked sec­ond at 103, moved up a weight class and beat Carthage’s Nate Kelly 12–4. Kelly is 15–4. At 160, Ozark’s Zeb Spicer, who is ranked sec­ond at 152, moved up to beat Carthage’s Seth Golay 3–2. Golay is 18–4.

  NIXA — Neosho had eight indi­vid­ual cham­pi­ons while rolling to the team cham­pi­onship at the Cen­tral Ozark Con­fer­ence Large Schools Divi­sion Tour­na­ment on Sat­ur­day.
  The Wild­cats’ Blake Stauf­fer, ranked No. 1 in Class 3 at 171 pounds, improved to 43–0.

Luko among nation’s top shoot­ers (Girls bas­ket­ball alumni)

  Nixa grad Ash­ley Luko is ranked sec­ond in NAIA D-I in 3-point field-goal per­cent­age. Despite a recent 2-of-8 slump beyond the arc, the Evan­gel guard is 33-of-64 on her 3-point attempts (.515). 
  Luko is aver­ag­ing 13.8 points a game.
  Other COC alumni far­ing well at the col­lege level include:
  — Nixa grad Mor­gan Smith is aver­ag­ing 16.8 points a game as a fresh­man for­ward at Col­lege of the Ozarks. 
  Smith, who also played at Marsh­field, is shoot­ing 52 per­cent from the field and has posted double-figure scor­ing in 17 of 19 games.
  — Boli­var grad Casey Gar­ri­son tops Mis­o­suri State with a 19.1 scor­ing aver­age, 109 assists and an aver­age of 36.4 min­utes played.
  — Marsh­field grad Lacey Boshe has had norms of 9.9 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Lady Bears.
  — Hol­lis­ter grad Bre­anna Daniels is aver­ag­ing 12.1 points and 4.2 rebounds a game as a sopho­more for­ward at Tru­man State.
  — Marsh­field grad Kayla Mes­sick tops C of O with 53 assists and has hit 25 3-pointers while aver­ag­ing 5.3 points a game.
  — Willard grad Megan Jew­ell has also hit 25 treys for C of O while aver­ag­ing 5.4 points a game.

Spring­field Catholic edges Boli­var (Boys bas­ket­ball roundup)

   SPRING­FIELD — Spring­field Catholic upped its record to 2–2 in the Cen­tral Ozark Con­fer­ence Small Schools Divi­sion by nos­ing past Boli­var 52–47 on Tues­day.
  The Irish were paced by Jef­frey White’s 13 points and Mitchell Richardson’s 10 points and six rebounds.
  Bolivar’s Pre­ston Guiot scored 18 points and Dal­ton Kel­ley 13.
  Catholic improved to 12–8 over­all.
  Else­hwere on Tues­day:
  — Willard downed Neosho 73–66 in a COC Large Schools Divi­sion tus­sle.
  The Wild­cats’ Alex Wise scored 21 points, Mar­cus Mid­dle­ton added a dozen, Michael Lowe net­ted 11 and Corey Cran­dall had 10.
  Neosho fell to 13–9 over­all and 2–2 in the COC. Willard is 13–9 over­all and 4–0 in con­fer­ence play.
  — Bran­son for­ward Dana Thomas had his sec­ond straight double-double to help the Pirates past Repub­lic 57–45 in a bat­tle of COC Large Schools Divi­sion ranked teams.
  Bran­son (21−2 over­all and 3–1 in the COC) is ranked No. 4 in Class 4 and Repub­lic (14−6 and 1–3) is No. 8 in Class 4.
  Thomas col­lected 12 points and 11 rebounds. Avery Ding­man topped the Pirates with 15 points and just missed a double-double, grab­bing nine boards. Tee Helsel con­tributed 11 points, Chris Ogden had nine and Sam Pugh dished out seven assists.
  Republic’s Kevin Stander fired in a game-high 20 points and Nick Yocum chipped in 11.
  — Nixa downed Ozark 68–47 to improve to 22–1 over­all and 4–0 in the COC Large Schools Divi­sion.
  The Eagles jumped out to a 15–0 lead.

Willard remains per­fect in COC play

  REPUB­LIC — Willard over­came a 31-point effort by Republic’s Kevin Stander to down the host Tigers 65–56 on Fri­day.
  Willard upped its record to 14–9 over­all and 5–0 in the COC Large Schools Divi­sion. Skyler Fra­zier topped the win­ners with 18 points and Tim Huskisson added 10.
  In addi­tion to Stander’s 31, Repub­lic received nine from Dylan Fletcher.
  Else­where on Fri­day:
  — Marsh­field was a 72–45 win­ner over Hol­lis­ter in a COC Small Schools Divi­sion matchup.
  Seth Martin’s 15 points and Josh Fletcher’s 14 led Hol­lis­ter.
  — Spring­field Catholic over­came a slow start to knock off Buf­falo 45–35.
  The Irish fell behind 9–0, before gain­ing a 21–20 half­time lead.
  Catholic (13−8 over­all and 3–2 in the COC Small Schools Divi­sion) was paced by Jack Wolf and his 13 points.
  The Bison’s Jor­dan Hen­der­son had eight points in the first quar­ter and fin­ished with a dozen.
  — Reeds Spring bounced back from an over­time loss to Rogersville ear­lier in the week by win­ning at Boli­var 69–59.
  The Wolves (11−9 over­all and 3–1 in the COC Small Schools Divi­sion) hit 14-of-17 free-throws in the fourth quar­ter.  
  Boli­var led 21–13, but Reeds Spring scored 25 points in the sec­ond quar­ter to gain con­trol and had 24 in the fourth quar­ter.  
  Ben Selby led the Wolves with 21 points, Jack McCoy and Chris Jones both con­tributed 14 and Kyle Fleck con­tributed eight.  
  The Lib­er­a­tors’ Dal­ton Kelly net­ted 22 points and Pre­son Guiot 17.
  — Bran­son gained win No. 22 by out­las­ing Neosho 76–66.
  The Pirates’ Avery Ding­man had a team-high 22 points, Dana Thomas had 16 and Tee Helsel 15.
  Neosho’s Michael Lowe hit six 3-pointers in his 26-point outing.

Lady Tigers awarded first and sec­ond seeds

  CARTHAGE — The Willard and Carthage girls bas­ket­ball teams were named the first and sec­ond seeds in Class Class 5 Dis­trict 12, to be played Feb. 22–27 at Carthage.
  The rest of the seeds include No. 3 Spring­field Hill­crest, No. 4 Spring­field Cen­tral, No. 5 Joplin and No. 6 Neosho.
  Willard and Carthage will receive fist-round byes. First-round games on Feb. 23 will include Central-Joplin and Neosho-Hillcrest.
  On the boys side, COC mem­bers Neosho and Carthage were tabbed the four and five seeds and will meet each other in a first-round game on Feb. 22.
  The rest of the seeds are No. 1 Hill­crest, No. 2 Joplin, No. 3 Willard and No. 6 Cen­tral. Willard and Cen­tral will also face off on Feb. 22.

COC to be rep­re­sented at state by 17 dis­trict champs

  The Cen­tral Ozark Large Schools Divi­sion is send­ing 56 state-qualifiers to the Class 3 State Wrestling Tour­na­ment this week in Colum­bia and the Small Schools Divi­sion will have 19 state-qualifiers at the Class 2 State Wrestling Tour­na­ment.
  The COC Large Schools Divi­sion and Small Schools Divi­sion had a com­bined 17 dis­trict cham­pi­ons crowned this past week­end. Ozark, Willard and Boli­var all had three first-place fin­ish­ers.
  Ozark’s Chass 3 Dis­trict 3 champs include 130-pound sopho­more Colton How­ell (44−1), 112-pound sopho­more Dmitry Loftis (38−6) and 145-pound junior Tren­ton Pat­ter­son (34−8). The Tigers have a state-qualifier at all 14 weight classes.
  Willard’s Class 3 Dis­trict 3 champs are 152-pound senior Tay­lor Ball (27−3), 215-pound senior Joel Wyman (40−1) and 285-pound sopho­more Chris­t­ian Adams (30−9). The Tigers have five state-qualifiers.
  Bolivar’s Class 2 Dis­trict 3 champs are 119-pound senior Eric Hughes (38−1), 160-pound senior Joshua Mof­fett (42−6) and 171-pound senior Kyle Walker (32−10). The Lib­er­a­tors have five state-qualifiers.
  Carthage has a pair of Class 3 Dis­trict 4 champs, 112-pound junior Nate Kelly (35−7) and 119-pound fresh­man Tyler Fea­gans (39−1). The Tigers have four state-qualifiers.
  Reeds Spring has two Class 2 Dis­trict 3 champs, 135-pound sopho­more Steven Morey (40−0) and 285-pound senior Kale Crosby (38−1). The Wolves have seven state-qualifiers.
  Neosho has one Class 3 Dis­trict 4 champ, 171-pound junior Blake Stauf­fer (48−1). The Wild­cats have 13 state-qualifiers.
  Rogersville has one Class 2 Dis­trict 3 champ, 130-pound senior Sam Zim­mer (44−2). He is a two-time state cham­pion. The Wild­cats have four state-qualifiers.

Five COC wrestlers crowned state cham­pi­ons

  COLUM­BIA — The Cen­tral Ozark Con­fer­ence pro­duced a hand­ful of state cham­pi­ons, with Neosho hav­ing a trio of champs, at the MSH­SAA State Wrestling Tour­na­ment on Sat­ur­day.
  Class 3 fea­tured a pair of All-COC finals.
  At 112, Neosho’s Joe Barnes edged Carthage’s Nate Kel­ley 3–1. Barnes fin­ishes with a 43–7 record. At 119, Neosho’s Trevor Hughes downed Carthage’s Trevor Fea­gans 5–1. Hughes ends with a 36–6 mark. 
  Ozark’s Dylan May claimed the 135-pound title by pin­ning Kearney’s Tan­ner Min­der in 4:55. May fin­ishes with a 30–4 record. Neosho’s Blake Stauf­fer was a dom­i­nat­ing 171-pound state cham­pion. His clos­est match at state was an 11–4 vic­tory. Staffer ends with a 52–1 mark.
  Class 3 state runners-up included Neosho 103-pounder Nate Rodriguez (48−6), Neosho 130-pounder Jared Brock (30−10), Ozark 152-pounder Zeb Spicer (38−7) and Willard 215-pounder Joel Wyman (43−2).
  In Class 2, Rogersville senior Sam Zim­mer three-peated as a state cham­pion en route to win­ning the 130-pound title. He scored a 3–1 deci­sion over Pleas­ant Hill’s Joshua Hast­ings in the final to up his record to 46–2.
  Class 2 state runners-up were Boli­var 119-pounder Eric Hughes (41−2) and Reeds Spring 135-pounder Steven Morey (43−1).

Lady Wild­cats drop first-round game (Girls bas­ket­ball roundup)

  CARTHAGE — Neosho’s sea­son came to an end as the Lady Wild­cats fell to Spring­field Hill­crest 61–31 in a Class 5 Dis­trict 12 first-round game on Tues­day.
  Shea Wyatt’s nine points topped Neosho.
  In the district’s other opening-round game, Spring­field Cen­tral edged Joplin 65–57.
  In semi­fi­nal play on Thurs­day, top-seeded Willard will meet Cen­tral and second-seeded Carthage will play Hillcrest.

  NIXA — Kristin Miller and Lexi Stag­ner com­bined for a shutout in Nixa’s 2–0 Cen­tral Ozark Con­fer­ence Large Schools Divi­sion win over Willard on Tues­day.
  The Lady Eagles’ Laruen Moats and Rachel Mur­phy recorded goals. Kelsey Haist and Mad­die Chan­dler pro­vided assists.
  Nixa is 8–2.
  The Lady Eagles’ jayvee won 6–1 to improve to 5−0−1.
Lady Irish edge Bolivar
  In a Cen­tral Ozark Con­fer­ence Small Schools Divi­sion match, Spring­field Catholic beat Boli­var 1–0.

Neosho knocks off Repub­lic (Base­ball roundup)

  NEOSHO — Alex Wise rapped out three hits to lead Neosho past Repub­lic 6–4 in Cen­tral Ozark Con­fer­ence Large Schools Divi­sion action on Tues­day.
  The win keeps the Wild­cats one game behind Bran­son for first place in the con­fer­ence.  
  Tyler King suf­fered the loss while allow­ing two earned runs.
Bran­son ral­lies past Willard
  At Bran­son, the Pirates pounded out 14 hits to beat Willard 11–3.
  Willard led 2–0 after two innings.
  Timmy Townsend was 3-for-5, while Tee Helsel, Mike Comp­ton, Chase Shields and Joe Keller all had two hits.
  Comp­ton was the win­ning pitcher, strik­ing out seven in six innings.
  Devin Phillips had an RBI-double for Willard and Tyler Hamp­ton con­tributed an RBI-single.
  Bran­son is 14–4 over­all and 5–0 in the COC Large Schools Division.

  WILLARD — Boli­var defeated Willard twice en route to win­ning the Willard Tour­na­ment title over the week­end.
  The Lady Lib­er­a­tors beat the Lady Tigers by counts of 3–1 and 4–1. Ear­lier, they knocked off Marsh­field 5–0.
Nixa downs Way­nesville
  Nixa beat non-conference foe Way­nesville 1–0 on Fri­day.
